What is inverted nipple correction surgery?

Inverted nipple correction surgery, also known as nipple eversion surgery, is a procedure to correct inverted nipples. Inverted nipples are nipples that are turned inward, rather than outward. This can be a cosmetic concern for some people, and it can also make breastfeeding difficult.

Who is a good candidate for inverted nipple correction surgery?

Inverted nipple correction surgery is a good option for people who have inverted nipples that they are self-conscious about. Some of the reasons why people choose to have inverted nipple correction surgery include:

  • To improve the appearance of the breasts
  • To correct asymmetry of the nipples

How is inverted nipple correction surgery performed?

Inverted nipple correction surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia. A number of techniques are available and Mr Jabir will choose the most appropriate technique in consultation with you but in general, it involves making small stab incisions around the nipple to release the underlying tissue that is causing the nipple to invert. The nipple will then be everted or turned outward, and stitches are used to hold the newly everted nipple in place and stop it from sinking back down.

What are the risks of inverted nipple correction surgery?

All surgery carries some risks, but the risks of inverted nipple correction surgery are generally low. Some of the potential risks include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Numbness or tingling in the nipple
  • Scarring
  • Unevenness of the nipples
  • Recurrence of inverted nipples (the nipples may “sink” back down)

What is the recovery process like after inverted nipple correction surgery?

You will need to wear a dressing on your nipple for a few days after surgery. You may also experience some pain and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication. The swelling and bruising will usually go away within a few weeks. You will need to keep your dressing water free until your wound check in 1 week.

What are the results of inverted nipple correction surgery?

The results of inverted nipple correction surgery are usually permanent. However, your nipples may continue to change slightly over time due to ageing or weight gain or loss.

Inverted nipple correction surgery can significantly improve the appearance of the breasts and make breastfeeding easier. If you are considering inverted nipple correction surgery, book a consultation with Mr Jabir to learn more about the risks and benefits of this procedure.
