Dr SHEHAB JABIR

Abdominoplasty / Tummy tuck

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin, fat, and stretch marks from the abdomen, and sometimes to tighten the abdominal muscles. It can improve the appearance of a sagging or wrinkled abdomen that has been caused by pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

Who is a good candidate for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

Abdominoplasty is a good option for people who have:

  • Excess skin and fat on their abdomen
  • A separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Stretch marks on their abdomen
  • A saggy or wrinkled abdomen
  • A flatter abdomen is important to them

What are the risks of abdominoplasty?

All surgery carries some risks, including:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Numbness or tingling in the skin
  • Fluid collection under the skin (seroma)
  • Scarring
  • Deep vein thrombosis

What happens during abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The exact surgical technique will be decided by Mr Jabir during your consult but in general it involves making an incision across the lower abdomen, from hip to hip. The excess skin and fat will be removed, and the abdominal muscles may be tightened. The skin will then be pulled up and stitched together.

How long does abdominoplasty take?

Abdominoplasty typically takes 2-4 hours. It can be done as a day-case procedure where you go home on the same day however in certain cases you may need to stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights after surgery.

What is the recovery time for abdominoplasty?

The recovery time for abdominoplasty is typically 6-8 weeks. You will need to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks to help support your abdomen and reduce swelling. You will also need to avoid strenuous activity for 6 weeks.

What are the results of abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty can produce dramatic results, giving you a flatter, more toned abdomen. However, it is important to remember that no surgery is perfect, and there will always be some scarring.

If you are considering abdominoplasty, be sure to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of the procedure.

Here are some additional tips for patients considering abdominoplasty:

  • Be realistic about your expectations. Abdominoplasty cannot completely erase the effects of aging or pregnancy.
  • Choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in abdominoplasty.
  • Ask your surgeon about their aftercare plan.
  • Be prepared for a lengthy recovery period.
  • Be patient with your results. It can take up to a year for your abdomen to fully heal.
