Gynaecomastia surgery (male breast reduction)

Male Breast Reduction / Gynaecomastia

What is gynaecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction surgery, is a procedure to remove excess breast tissue and fat in men. This can improve the appearance of the chest and reduce symptoms such as discomfort, self-consciousness, and social anxiety.

Who is a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a good option for men who have enlarged breasts that cause them physical or emotional discomfort. Some of the symptoms that may be improved by gynecomastia surgery include:

  • Enlarged breasts
  • Discomfort or pain in the chest
  • Self-consciousness or social anxiety about the appearance of the chest

How is gynaecomastia surgery performed?

Gynaecomastia involves an increase in male breast size due to excess fat , breast glandular tissue and skin. Surgery targets the removal of all 3 of these tissue in varying amounts depending on each patient’s individual needs. It is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Mr Jabir will choose the technique most appropriate to your situation in discussion with you during your consultation, but in general the surgery involves a combination of liposuction of the excess fat and direct excision of the breast glandular tissue through a well-camouflaged cut around the lower half of the areola. The cut is then closed with stitches.

What are the risks of gynaecomastia surgery?

All surgery carries some risks, but the risks of gynecomastia surgery are generally low. Some of the potential risks include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Numbness or tingling in the nipple or breast
  • Scarring
  • Unevenness of the breasts
  • Loss of sensation in the nipple or breast
  • Recurrence on weight gain

What is the recovery process like after gynecomastia surgery?

Gynaecomastia surgery is usually performed as a day-case procedure. You will need to wear a compression dressing for 4 weeks after surgery.

You will likely experience some pain and discomfort after surgery. This can be managed with pain medication. You may also experience some swelling and bruising. These symptoms will usually improve over time.

You will need to take it easy for several weeks after surgery. You should avoid strenuous activity, lifting heavy objects, and driving. You should also avoid getting your dressings wet until your wound check in 1 week.

What are the results of gynaecomastia surgery?

The results of gynaecomastia surgery are usually permanent. However, your breasts may continue to change slightly over time due to ageing or weight gain or loss.

Gynaecomastia surgery can significantly improve the appearance of the chest and reduce symptoms such as discomfort, self-consciousness, and social anxiety. If you are considering breast reduction surgery, book a consultation with Mr Jabir to learn more about the risks and benefits of this procedure.
